Record a site survey

2 min read Updated 2026-08-21 WindoorERP 19.0

What this does

Records the measurements taken on site, so the factory builds to the opening that exists rather than the one on the architect's drawing.

Before you start

  • The order should be confirmed — a survey without a job to attach it to gets lost.
  • Take the tools you will need to record on the spot: the survey is far more accurate written at the opening than in the van.

Steps

  1. 01
Open the project and its work packages.
  2. 02
Open the survey for the unit or elevation you are measuring.
  3. 03
Record the measured opening — width and height, and where they were taken.
  4. 04
Note the site conditions that affect fitting: out-of-square, finishes not yet applied, access.
  5. 05
Attach photographs of anything a written note cannot carry.
  6. 06
Save, and flag any unit whose measurement differs materially from the order.

Measure it properly

  • Take width and height at three points each and record the smallest — openings are rarely square.
  • Record whether the figure is the structural opening or the finished one.
  • Check the wall is plumb before deciding a frame will fit.

Important

A survey that differs from the quoted size is a commercial event, not just a technical one. Raise it before production starts — a re-made unit is paid for by whoever failed to flag it.

Common mistakes

  • Surveying before the wet trades are finished, then building to a size the plaster changes.
  • Recording one measurement per opening.
  • Keeping the numbers in a notebook, so the factory works from the original order.
